HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2010 5 LHS athletic constructed begin soon By MIM] MONTOYAILHS The Lordsburg High School athletics uepartment will end this school year on a very high note. Construction of a new high school football field and track has been approved A new park- ing lot to accommodate Maver- ick fans will also be bmlt. "We are currently in the planning process and preparing for demolition which will be- gin within the next 30 days," said Vance Lee Jr.. LHS Princi- pal. Although the home bleach- ers are reusable, the visitors" bleachers and the ticket booth at the northwest section of the stadium are scheduled to be de- molished. The athletic field house, concession stand, admin- istration office, enrichment cen- ter and cafeteria will not be af- fected by the construction. Th 'onstruction involving the fiek. cenovation will consist of three :qajor changes. The first includes rotanng he direcnon of the field Instead of running north and south, the field will be runmng east and west. The home bleachers will be facing north and opposing team bleach- ers facil : south. The second major change will be the parking lot. which will be built in the space be- tween the high school adminis- tration office and the cafeteria. creating about 100 parking spaces. Instead of parking in the student parking lot oehind the school, fans can park in the new lot There will be no spaces available for parking around the field. Finally, the third major change involves small details concerning the field, which will be made of synthetic, turf with the lines and logos sewn in. This synthetic turf will be economi- cally friendly by saving water. and saving on paint and fertil- izer as well. New lights will be installed with hoods, which will have little to no spillage of lights. The last addition to the stadium will be the track. "We are building a six-lane. all weather track around the field to accommodate track and field." stated Principal Lee. "'Track meets will be held here by next spring, and the track will be open to the public as well.'" These recent renovations are a direct result of the $4 mil- lion bond approved to address the Facility Industrial Arts Pro- gram, which was .passed in Feb- ruary of 2009. Further expected renovations will include an In- dustrial Arts shop edition and a baseball/sftball complex neat the LHS campus, which will be built about a year apart. "The first event to be held on the new field Will be the class of 2010 graduation." stated Lee. BYA offers cure for boredom Nothirg to do?
