HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2011 7" Just A Thought Whatever you do for the least of these By RICK KRAFT An elderly gentleman got up early one morning and decided to go for a walk along the nearby ocean shore. It was a cool morn- ing, the sun had not yet risen and warmed the day. As he ap- proached the shoreline he saw a little boy bend- ing over and standing up, bending over and standing up, over and over again. Th'e boy appeared to be franti- cally throwing things into the water. The elderly gentle- man walked towards the .boy to see what he was doing. As he got closer he saw that there were star- fish all along the shoreline for as far as he could see. Apparently the tide had gone out quickly letving thousands of starfish stranded behind. The man asked the boy, 'What are you doing?" The little boy didn't break stride, but told the man that if these starfish do not get back into the ocean right away, they will die. The man looked at the boy and said "It is .hopeless. You're wasting your time. You can't save all these star- fish. There are too many of them." The little boy never looked up. Time was critical to him. He continued in his efforts. As he tossed a starfish to safety he said, "I know, but I made a difference in the life of that one!" He tossed another starfish into the ocean and said, "And that one!" And yet another, "And that one!" The little boy was focusing on the starfish he could save one at a time, not the hundreds he couldn't. As in the case with the boy and the starfish, we make a difference in the lives of others one life at a time. Don't worry about the starfish at the far end of the beach, take care of the one right in front of'you. Rick Kraft I ask you the question, are you discouraged because there are others in the distance you can't help or are you encouraged because of those right in front of you that you can help? Either way your shoreline is the same. The difference is the perspective you choose. This is the perspec- tive Mother Terbsa chose. It is the story of her life and her message to the world. Mother Teresa was once asked to assist in the creation of a grandiose hospital that would be named after her. It was pointed out to her that through the hospi- tal she could affect the lives of many. When asked her thoughts she responded, "God did not call me to minister to the millions, but to minister to the one in front of me." Mother Teresa understood the importance of making a dif- ference one life at a time. What I want you to under- stand is that she was born into this world just like you or I. She did not possess any magical powers when she was born. She just made good choices aimed at making a difference in the life she lived. She lived her life one day at a time and one life at a time. Remember Pee Wee Reese, former shortstop for the Brook- lyn Dodgers? He made a differ- ence. Most of you are familiar with Jackie Robinson, he was the first African-American to play major league baseball. He broke the color barrier in the late 1940s. He was consistently heckled, spit upon and objects were regularly thrown at him. His own team- mates didn't care for him. Op- posing pitchers were instructed to throw at him. Robinson faced jeering crowds, death threats, and loads of abuse in just abo'ut ev- ery stadium he visited because of the color of his skin. On a hot afternoon one day in his team's home town ballpark in Brooklyn he committed an er- ror when he booted a ground ball hit to him. Immediately, his own fans began to ridicule him as they broke loose with boos. As you are aware, there is no place to hide I at.econd base. He stood.ere .- humitiated, alone in, front of God and everyone, while his team's fans continued to jeer at him. Pee Wee Reese walked over to him from his position at short- stop and stood next to Jackie Robinson. He put his arm on Jackie's shoulder and waited. The boos continued for one minute,. two minutes, and into a third minute. Finally, the booing stopped. It was not until then that Pee Wee dropped his arm from Jackie's shoulder and walked back to his position at shortstop. Jackie Robinson later re- called as he stood there on that afternoon, he was at the end of his rope and he had had enough. He said he was on the verge of walking off the field and hang- ing up his spikes when shortstop Pee Wee came along side him. On that afternoon, Pee Wee Reese's arm on Jackie's shoulder saved Jackie's career. Who do you need to come along side of? Who needs your uplifting, encouragement, and support? Whose shoulder can you put your arm on. and make a difference? My challenge to you today is to make a difference every day you live in one life. It is not a complex thought. It is actually quite simple. Who is one life who you can touch and lift up today? Don't be overwhelmed or discouraged by the countless lives in the distance that you can- not reach. Focus on the one God places in front of you. Help that life. As is stated in Matthew 25:40, "The King will reply, 'I tell ybu the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these broth- ers of mine, you did for me.'" Mother Teresa truly believed this. She modeled this for us in the life she lived. Your arm on the shoulder of another can make all the differ- ence in the world in the life of that single person. Who is it that you need to come along side? Make a difference, do it today, one life at a time. Just a thought... Rick Kraft is a motivational speaker, a published author, and an attorney. 'Nuff said Dear Editor, Congressman Engle Dem. from NY, says it's unconscionable not to tax the rich more even tho. they are being taxed over 46%, unconscionable, Wow! Also I read where some jerk wants to reinstate the (death tax) inherit- ance tax. Has he and others ever read the constitution? That's nothing but double taxation. When people make money they pay taxes, then when they die the family has to pay taxes on the money that taxes has already been paid on. Why don't these politicians just get a gun & rob you. Instead they try to rob your family by making it a Law. Oxy-moron law!! I think the government should take these idiots money & property before they die to show them what its like. Like wise the lovely envi- ronmentalist. If they want to save a lizard or frog or what- ever, let's just use their money. Oops, I'll catch heck for that. Use your money! ! Then there was some one on TV just this morning saying the carmel in coca cola "might" cause cancer. Why give these nuts TV time. I drink at least 1 coke a day sometimes 3. I am 79 years old, No cancer! Nun yer d-- business., period!! I spend MY money, I put it-into, MY body. I don't charge you. Besides this is America. Keep your big fat nose outa other people's business. Look at your own house, stay outa mine! By the way, I see gasoline at $3.49. That's $1.32 higher than 2 years ago. Lets's see, the democrats accused Pres. Bush & Chaney of being in the pocket of oil interest. Hum! Now do we blame Obama & Joe Biden. Yea? Let's hear it on news OK! I guess when you bowed down to some king, maybe it didn't help..Come on Pres. we need a break, bring the gas prices down. Ha Instead they will just blame big oil. Yeah, that's what they'll do. Myself I put the blame on politicians, Those people have passed laws, envi- ronmental bull, put land that has oil under it into some wilder- ness area or such. And our sena- tors are as much at fault as any- body. So when you go to a gas pump, put the blame where it belongs. YOUR politicians. Nuff SaM God Bless ......
