Knell can be reached at 505-660- 0793 (cell). He can also be reached via e-mail at Knell worked for U.S. Repre- sentative Heather Wilson when she was the CYFD Cabinet Secre- Amanda Walter completes Naval basic training , Submitted by HOMETOWN NEWS Navy Seaman Recruit Amanda .J. Walter, daughter of Tara J. Peterson of Las Cruces, NM and Warren D. Walter, of Animas, NM, recently completed U.S. Nayy basic training at Re- cruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week pro- gram, Walter completed a vari- ety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to suc- ceed in the fleet. "Battle Sta- tions" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sac- rifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Walter is a 2007 graduate of Animas High School of Animas, NM. tary. He helped Wilson and the Department with communica- tions and outreach projects and left state government in 1998 to hel p elect Wilson to Congress. He then served Wilson and the First Congressional District in several capacities, including as a con- stituent services caseworker and ultimately as a part of Wilson's Congressional and campaign management teams. Knell has two children, a 15-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. "It's my passion to protect children," Berumen-Deines said. "Enrique shares that passion and has years of experience in com- munications work in the federal and state 'governments. He will be a tremendous asset in helping CYFD communicate our efforts to strengthen our core mission of protecting our kids." "I first joined CYFD 15 years ago," says Knell. "It's an honor to rejoin the Department and help communicate the work their em- J-:.... ployees do to protect children. These are challenging times for the Department and under Gov- ernor Martinez and Secretary. Deines we will see improvements to how CYFD does business. I'm excited to be a part of this ongo- ing mission to protect our chil- dren and families." Martinez and CYFD Secre- tary-designate Berumen-Deines met more than 25 years ago in an E1 Paso courtroom where Berumen-Deines, then head of the sexual abuse unit for the Texas Child Protective Services Depart- ment, was testifying as an expert witness in a murder case in which young children watched their fa- ther kill their pregnant mother. CYFD has a roughly $400 million budget, more than 2,100 employees, 250 incarcerated youths, 4,000 youths on proba- tion and 1,800 kids in foster care. It is also responsible for investi- gating more than 30,000 child abuse calls each year.
