4 HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 20!3 Students participate in Living Wax Museum For the past two months Mr. Saenz' class at Central Elementary School has been studying influential people in history. The students, along with their families, put a lot of time and effort into researching and learning their chosen person's life. The goal of this project was to allow the students to gain a more in depth understanding of people from our history and to also understand what it was that made them so influential to the people around them and the people that would follow in their footsteps. Mr. Saenz also wanted his students to research their chosen person to where they were able to portray that specific person in a Living Wax Museum, which was held on March 8, 2012. He wanted his students to notice the doorways that these influential people opened up for us all. Ga~es and other Internet power- houses. Sal Khan wants to change education worldwide from his little recording room in Silicon Valley. Khan. 35, is a math, sci- ence, and history teacher to mil- lions of students, yet none have ever seen his face. Khan is the voice and brains behind Khan Academy in Moun- tain View, Calif., a free online tu- toring site that features 'how-to' educational videos and helps more than four million pupils a month. It's going worldwide. Kahn has three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard. He works in a tiny office above a tea sh0~ wherd'he r~cords videos. When Kahan finishes a brief lecture, he uploads it to his website, where it joins more than 3,000 other lessons he's done. Kahn, reports CBS, has 'this un- canny ability to break down even the most complicated subjects," from physics, to astronomy, to medicine. Lordsburg High math in- structors l:rank Silva and Armando Rosales both highly recommend the site to their stu- dents. "This website has got to be one of the best tools available for online Mathematics Education: It has been a tremendous asset to my classroom, and I have used it for ,tutoring students from Lordsburg who are now in college level courses. They have video presentations/dem- onstrations and also allow prae; tice problems with actuall solu= tions worked out on the video," said Rosales. Mr. Silva added that th~ Khan Academy is an excellefit. site to reinforce or learn about a particular topic in math or sci- ence. He also said he makes sure all of lais seniors are aware o i~ the site. All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a stu< dent. teacher, h ome-schooler; principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or friendly alien just trying to get a ,leg up in earthly biology.
