Don't Splat! "Prom and graduation sea- son is upon us and sadly this exciting time also often includes news headlines reporting tragic vehicle crashes involving young people not wearing seat belts." said Transportation Secretary Gir6n. "Our goal through this new campaign is to catch their attention and save more lives by motivating teen drivers and pas- sengers to bugkle up." At a news conference today, transportation officials an- nounced a video contest that en- courages teens to create short videos that convince and moti- vate their peers to wear seat belts. The contest begins today and the deadline to submit the entries is May 8. For details and contest rules, please visit www.c lickdontsplat.com. WHAT A CHILD LEARNS ABOUT VIOLENCE A CHILD LEARNS FOR LIFE. Click. Don't Splat! is a two-phase campaign that in- cludes: education - teaching teens about the need to buckle up for safety and also because it's the law: and enforcement - stepped up seat belt enforce- ment to crack down on teen vio- lators. NMDOT is teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to launch this cam- paign. According to NHTSA, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatalities among teens in the United States. In 2007 alone. 4.450 passengers and vehicle occu- pants' 16-20 years old were killed in motor vehicle crashes. of that more than half were un- restrained. Such crashes claimed the lives if 36 teens in New Mexico last year and over 273 were injured. Law enforcement officers will be increasing patrols and enforcement zones in eight high:risk counties from May 11- 17. focusing their efforts in ar- eas that are heavily traveled by teens and handing out tough fines to teen violators. Counties participating in this campaign include" Bernalillo. Dona Ana, San Juan. Lea, McKinley, Rio Arriba, Sandoval and Valencia. A new teen website - www.clickdontsplat.com - was launched today and features re- sources on safe driving as well as an interactive quiz to test seat belt knowledge. Visitors to the site can earn a free music down- load after taking the quiz. The campaign is modeled after suc- cessful campaigns implemented in Colorado and Nevada to in- crease seat belt use in high-risk teenagers. For more information con- tact: Veronica Valencia. NMDOT PIO, 699-3864 [] When you study the findings of the various agencies and companies who rate banks for strength and security, it becomes quite obvious that bigger is not necessarily better. Of course there are exceptions, but you will generally find that smaller banks fare better in the quality ratings than the big ones do. Bigger is not better. 101 years without a bailout. Didn 't need one then, don't need one now: Member Lordsburg, NM Silver City, 'NM Why do you Worship. By CLYDE R. MAHANISan Simon First Baptist Church What is it that compels you to get up, get dressed, and volun- tarily assemble with a group of people to worship? What causes you to share personal and private prayer requests with that group of people? Why do you sing the ancient hymns? What causes you to put money in the offering? And. then, why do you do it all agairl' the next week? Why do you worship? Do we worship to please God; is He the primary beneficiary of our worship? Are we really so naYve as to think that Almighty God is impressed with our Sun- day attire? Do we really think that God is amazed at how good we sing, or how much money we put in the offering? Hardly! God doesn't need anything! He doesn't need oxygen, or wa- ter. or food. or shelter, or compan- ionship. And. He doesn't need our worship. If we think that we supply any single thing that God might need. we are seriously misguided!- That's the main problem with Christianity in our society today. Most Christians in the United States believe in a man-centered gospel, instead of ~i God-centered Gospel! When we begin to think about it, the worshiper is the pri- mary beneficiary! Yes. it does bless God when we worship Him. but He doesn't need our worship and praise to maintain His stat- ure and His position as Supreme Being. When I worship, I give my undivided attention to God. This transforms my attitude: I am fo- cused on His grace and loving kindness; on His holiness; on His presence ! What happens to my burdens when I worship? They pale in His majestic presence! My burdens and problems are unloaded... again! Even without realizing it. I had mechanically shouldered the same old burdens and have been trying to get through life carrying this unnecessary and ~ngodly cargo. What happens to my prayers when I worship? I begin to real- ize that my little needs and con- cerns are not nearly as important as those of others. So. I begin to lift up my brothers and sisters in prayer. I begin to intercede for our nation and our leaders. This is why genuine worship is so powerful! It gets us re- aligned with Almighty God. It gives us just a glimpse God's power, grace, and love. Worship transports us from the physical into the spiritual; from the tem- porary into the eternal! In John 4:23-24. Jesus said, "But the hour ~s coming, and now is. when the true worshipers wilt worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit. and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.'" We are to worship God in everything we do - from the time we get up until the time we go tO bed: And, we are to worship God m every place. If you find tha~ you cannot worship God in the place where you are, you need to move ! Worship is our response it~ His presence. Until we experi" ence the awesome and life changL ing presence of Almighty God. our worship will be nothing more than a mimicked choreography learned from those few who have truly been in the Throne Room. Heavenlv Father. may I abide in Your presence. May I worship you with all my heart, with all my mind. with all my soul. and with all my strength. May every thought and deed exalt and glo- rify You. I pray this in the Name of Jesus. the Risen Christ.
