HIDALGO cOUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, APRIL 30 2010 GNF makes Bear Creek land purchase Submitted by GILA NATIONAL FOREST/Silver City The Gila National Forest has made an important purchase of 1293 acres of private land along Bear Creek located north of Silver City. Purchase amount was for $2.4 million. This property has unique characteristics that pro- vide additional access to forested lands, lends. itself for a wide range of recreation uses in- cluding hiking, camp- ing, horseback riding, etc., and protects the property's riparian (water de- pendent community) environ- ment and natural beauty for the enjoyment of the American pub- lic. Senator Jeff Bingaman was i.nstrumental in acquiring the funding for this critical land ac- quisition. The Trust for Public Land, a land conservati.on nonprofit organization dedicated to con- serving land for people as parks and other natural places, assisted the Forest in negotiating the pur- chase of this tract of land• Fund- ;ng was provided from the Land monies and matching grants to federal, state, and local govern- ments for the acquisition of land and easements of land for the benefit of all Americans. At this time, access to the land is possible from the south and west. The Forest is cur- rently evaluating management options for future access along the east boundary. The east-west length of this tract is approximately 6 miles, while the dimension of the north-south width is approxi- mately 1/4 of a mile. This un- and Water Conservation Fund, developed property is sur- a Federal program established rounded by the Forest, with the by Congress in 1964 to provide exception of private lands east and west of the tract. A major tributary of the Gila River, Bear ’ Creek is considered pe- rennial-interrupted,. with sections that may dry up seasonally, de- pending on weather events. The riparian vegetation habitat along this creek' provides an excellent mix of cover habitat for a wide di- versity of wildlife. For questions about this recent For- est purchase of private land, please contact Lands and Min- erals Specialist John Baumberger at the Forest Supervisor's Office, 575-388- 8238. i iiiiiiiiiii Gila River - The flow,is at 408 CFS and the water is murky from runoff.
