Perhaps you've looked into the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan for Mom before, and discov- ered that she did not qualify due to her income or resources, In 2010, the law has changed. As Chubby Checker will tell you, a new "twist" in the law makes it easier than ever to qualify for the extra help. It's easy to figure out whether Morn is eligible for the extra help. To qualify, she must be re- ceiving Medicare and: Have income limited to $16,245 for an individual or $21, 855 for a married couple living together. Even if her annual in- come is higher, she still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co- payments. Some examples in which income may be higher in- clude if she or her husband: --Support other family members who live with them; --Have earnings from work; or --Live in Alaska or Hawaii; and Have resources limited to $12,510 for an individual or $25,010 for a married couple liv- ing together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks and bonds. We do not count her house or car as re- sources. Thanks to this a "twist" in the law, we no longer count any life insuPance policy she has as a resource, and we no longer count as income any financial assis- tance she receives regularly from someone else to pay her house- hold expenses like food, mort- gage or rent, utilities or property taxes. What better gift could you give her this Mother's Day? !, HCSD has new DARE vehicle The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department has purchased a 2010 Chevy Camaro for the Drug Aware- hess Reeistance Education (DARE)program. The funds were acquired though the local court sys- tem and by volunteer donations.The money is used to purchase DARE propaganda and passed out to our county schools as gifts.The DARE car will bring a positive influence to the kids by theuse of the emergency lights and graphics on the car.The ca~ will be displayed at schools, pa- rades and DARE. events. The DARE curriculum is designed to be taught by police officers whose training and experience give them the background needed to answer the sophisti- cated questions often posed by young students about drugs and crime. DARE is a police officer- led series of classroom lessons that teaches the 5th graders in Animas and Lordsburg Schools on how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
