Carolyn W. Colvin, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, recently unveiled a new initiative to expedite disability applica- tions from veterans with a Depart- ment of Veterans Affairs (VA) dis- ability compensation rating of 100 percent Permanent and Total (P&T). Under the new process, Social Security will treat these veterans' applications as high pri- ority and issue expedited deci- sions, similar to the way we cur- rently handle disability claims from wounded warriors. "Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it is only right that we ensure they have timely access to the disabil- ity benefits they may be eligible for and deserv'e," said Acting Commissioner Colvin. Deputies' sacrifice recognized by HCSD "It is long overdue," Sheriff Saturnino Madero told a crowd gath- ered to honor two former Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies last month in Lordsburg. Former HCSD deputies Ali Salinas, Jr. and the late Chon Trujillo were each recognized for the sacrifice they gave 19 years ago when they were ambushed by two murder sus- pects near Virden. The young couple torched a Virden home-- killing the elderly woman inside. A shootout ensued and both Sali- has and Trujillo were shot during the ambush. Sheriff Madero said that after some research he discovered that neither deputy had ever been publicly recognized for their sacrifice. The special cer- emony held in their honor featured Senator John Arthur Smith, who gave a moving speech in honor of Salinas and Trujillo. Com- missioner Ed Kerr presented Salinas andTrujillo's mother, Gloria, with a plaque of recognition. Sheriff Madero presented both fami- lies with an honoree deputy badge and thanked them for their service.
