HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2010 7 Just A Thought What happens to you when you get squeezed? By RICK KRAFT What happens to you when you get squeezed? What comes out? Being "squeezed" is what happens to a person instinctively when he is pushed to the limit. It isn't a response thought out for days in advance. It is how a person automatically responds when he is hammering, misses the nail, and hits his thumb. It is an unex- pected question in a highly emotional situ- ation. It is how an athlete re- sponds when he is intentionally fouled. I think you can tell who someone really is by how they respond when they are squeezed• Let me explain. Some people live their life right on the edge. They move for- ward through their day but with one misstep or one slip they fall off the side and go into a tirade. They have some good days, but for the most part, they live their days just waiting for something to go wrong so they can have their day ruined. They are like kernels of popcorn ready to ex- plode. All they need is a little heat and BOOM!, they explode. Pe6ple with this condition often control those around them because those around them do their best to prevent ever apply- ing heat. The people who work around them walk lightly so as to not ignite the quick tempered or quick tongued individual. For example, let's call the person who lives on the edge "Harry." Harry loses his cool Rick Kraft about four days a week. You can pretty much bet on it. The ques- tion for the typical day is, "Who is it that is going to set Harry off today?" In other words, the staff around Harry doesn't wonder "if" Harry will be set off. but "who" will be the culprit. Because of Harry's time bomb na- ture. the rest' of the staff shape their lives around him. What is amazing is that this.condition often exists even when Harry is not the boss. Even if Harry has three supervi- sors over him, the three superw- sors shape their day to keep from offending Harry. Although they have authority over him, they don't want a de-motivated and destructive employee shaking up all of the other employees. So Harry, because" of his demeanor. is able to control those 9ver him. next "to him. and under him. Rather than expect Harry to modify his behavior and lower his boiling point, we often just work around Harrys and allow them to use their explosive per- sonalities to control the rest of us. Some Harrys don't need to ex- plode but once a month, but if it is a significant enough event, he can control others for the rest of the month. When Harry is squeezed even the slightest• his temper comes OUt. I often joke that when my daughter Kelsey, now 21 years old. meets a young man who she considers marrying, I am going to invite him over and play him in a basketball game, one on one. Position 2. subject to the June 1, 2010 Democratic Primary Election. I would appreciate your vote of support. Clayton Jack Lasher As we play, I will play him close defensively and will push him around a little; nothing violent. but enough to see how h re- sponds to frustration. I want to see what he is made of. What he is made of will come out when he is squeezed. Playing him one on one will be my effort to squeeze him. This would put him in a competitive, emotional, and physical state to see what he is really like on the inside. If he plays aggressively and keeps his cool.. I .will learn some- thing about him. If he cusses and shoves me back or if he punches me in the face this will teach me something else. If he stops the game and says he can't continue, this tells me yet another thing. Each of us. can think of many individuals who have been squeezed throughout history with a variety of responses. One of Jesus's closest disciples, Peter, was squeezed in the final days of Jesus's life as is told us in the Bible at John 18:15-18 and 25- 27. Even though Jesus proph- esied to Peter that he would do so. Peter instinctively denied be- ing his disciple not once, not twice, but three times. What came out of Peter when he was squeezed? Two thousand years later, at Columbine High School in Littleton. Colorado, young sev- enteen year old Cassie Bernall was squeezed. She was asked with a gun at her head, "Do you be- lieve in God?" Her one word re- sponse indicated to us what she was truly made of. "Yes," she re- sponded. We are regularly squeezed in the lives we live. Someone yells at us for something we did. Some- one yells at us for something we didn't do. A temptation is placed in front of us. Sometimes we are squeezed financially. Often we are squeezed emotionally. We are regularly squeezed in the work- place. We are regularly squeezed at home. Sometimes we are squeezed intentionally by an- other, sometimes it is by pure accident. It has happened to each of us countless times in the past. We will continue to experience squeezing in the future. The question is, "what comes out?" My challenge to you today is to encourage you to examine and make right the person who you are deep down inside. Make sure you grow and develop the inner you to be the best that you can. Prepare yourself in ad- vance spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, and fi- nancially in order that good things come out when you get squeezed! It will occur. And when it does. you will see what you are made of. The rest of the world will also see what you are made of. Just a thought... Originating in the United States. the Relay For Life event has spread to 21 countries world- wide. Relay events, are held in local communities, campus uni- versities, military bases, and in cyberspace. Although the main objective of Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is held to spread cancer awareness, cel- ebrate the lives of survivors, re- member those who lost their lives to cancer, and unite a community in the fight against cancer. It is estimated that Relay For Life hours, Dr. Klatt walked around the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 min- utes with him. He walked ap- proximately 83 miles and raised $27,000 to fight cancer. Nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt's friends, fam- ily, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. Af- ter this successful event, Dr. Klatt thought about how other people could partake in a simi- lar 24-hour event in communi- ties across the country. He re- cruited a small team of people and put on the first Relay For Life event in 1986. Since then, Relay has developed into an overnight event where people bring tents and sleep out around the tracks. People of all ages come out to bring the commu- nity together and reminisce about their loved ones who have died of cancer and honor those who have survived while rais- ing money to fight for a cure. Now, almost 4 million people take part in Relay events in over 5,000 communities in the United State£ I..Ro z Chef Patisserie & .Baking with Honors o "Le Cordo,n Bleu fellcidad(0000 pot hoberl00 (j-ool00joclo con College of Culinary Arts" honore<00.
