HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2010 7 Just A Thought Create your own path and then leave a trail By RICK KRAFT Don't go where the path may lead. Create your own path and leave a trail for others to follow. It is amazing what we can do once we know it can be done. But it takes that one person to set the curve. It takes that one person to create the path. A pioneer who believes it can be done. An uncommon man or woman who has the dedication and commitment to go out and show the way. And then once the path has been created, he or she can look back over their shoulder and say, "Follow me." Several years ago I heard a Paul Harvey broadcast that got me thinking about the importance of the concept, "Follow me." He talked about how we need to show the way, not just point the way. You have heard people say, "Do as I say, not as I do." What they should be saying is "Do as I do." Sometimes the biggest gap in the world is the gap between saying and doing. Mr. Harvey shared that from the time of the early Olympics, man has strived to run a mile in under four minutes. Roger Ban- nister finally broke the barrier in June of 1954. His accomplish- ment was both a physical and a Rick Kraft mental breakthrough• After de- cades of athlete after athlete giv- ing their best to break the mark once, it took less than two months for John Landy to become the second to break it. Soon the sub-four minute mile became a regular occur- rence• Roger Bannister said; "Follow me" and others did. Not long ago it was inconceivable that man could travel and survive at speeds above sixty miles per hour. Barney Oldfield pushed a car to a speed in excess of sev- enty miles an hour. He said, "Fol- low me" and the rest of us did. Mankind lived thousands of years before sending a spaceship into orbit. In October of 1957 the Russians proved that it could be done. Within three months, the United States followed suit. They said, "Follow me" and to- day ships regularly travel into space and back at times going almost unnoticed. The first heart transplant was done in 1967 by a doctor in South Africa. Less than two weeks later, five hearts were transplanted. Doctor Christiaan Barnard said, "Follow me" and others did. The Old Testament sought to point the way to heaven, but that was not enough. Christ came to earth and had to show us the wa)t. He said, "Follow me" and others did. For centuries, hundreds of years, man had predicted that it could and would be done, but some one uncommon man had to run on ahead and reach out and bring the gold within the reach of the rest of us. Mahatma Ghandi said that you can lead without violence. Mother Teresa taught us. to" take care of the one in front of us and to make a difference one life at a time. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of a dream of racial equal- ity. Each of these said, "Follow me" and others did. The most effective evange- list lives what he preaches. The most successful businessmen are the first ones to work. They each set an example in the life that they live. An effective leader says, "Follow me" and people listen. Over two hundred years ago our country was founded on countless freedoms. Freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, free- dom of travel, freedom of life, lib- erty, and the pursuit of happiness to name just a few: We created a representative government that is built on one person, one vote. We became the envy of the world. We said, "Follow me" and many na- tions have. There is not a more effective way to lead than to show the way. Pointing the way is not enough. Leading by threats will not work; leading by fear can only last so long. Whether it is leading your community, your organization, your family, or in your personal life, lead by example. Show that what you are preaching can be done. If you show that you can do it, others will develop the con- fidence to do it also. It only takes one to break through the barrier and soon others will follow. My challenge to you today is to create your own path. If you are not the lead dog, the view never changes. Step out and do something that makes a differ- ence. Don't be a common man. This world has too many common men. Be uncommon. Be a leader. A leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Be bold. Don't limit what you can do. Take the lead and create a path. Then look back over your shoulder, smile, gesture with your hand, and say, "Follow me." Just a thought...
