June i Courtesy submission, Former resident Master Ser- geant (MSgt) Joe Aquino III, son of Joe and Olivia Aquino, will retire after 21 years of service to our great nation. The retire- ment is scheduled for June 1, 2012 at the Air and Space Mu- seum on Peterson AFB in Colo- rado Springs, CO. MSgt Aquino entered the Air Force in December of 1990..After basic training at Lackland AFB, TX, he at- tended Space Operations Tech- nical Training at Lowry AFB in Denver, CO. After technical training he made the short drive to Colorado Springs, CO and Falcon AFS home of the 3 'd Satellite Communication Squadron, where he became part of the initial cadre of en- listed space operators. During this time he worked as Ground System Operator, Satellite Sys- tem Operator and Chief of North Atlantic Treaty Organi- zation Phase III satellite train- ing..He earned certifications as trainer and evaluator. He was also the Lead Ground System Operator on numerous satellite launches to include Defense Satellite Communication Sys- tem III, the US Navy's Ultra High Frequency Follow-On and Milstar. MSgt Aquino's follow-on assignment was to Royal Air Force (RAF) Edzell in Scot- land where he was assigned to the 17 th Space Surveillance Squadron as a Lo Altitude Space Surveillance System Operator. MSgt Aquino's next as- signment took him to RAF Feltwell, where he was part of the initial cadre to move the Low Altitude Space Surveillance Sys- tim (LASS) in Scotland to its new home at the 5 th Space Surveillance Squadron. He also earned certifi- cations as a staff instructor. His next assignment was to Holloman AFB, NM and the 4 *h Space Surveillance Squadron. He MSgt Joe Aquino III was responsible for bringing three crew mobility positions online and was the lead instruc- tor for the Deployable Space Sup- port Segment. Tuesday, June 5! l l ,RICHARD The Aquino family then moved to the Central Coast and Vandenberg AFB CA, where MSgt Aquino was assigned to the 533 Training Squadron. His re- sponsibility included teach- ing 1500+ hours to over 100 students and was an in- structor supervisor. Their next assignment took them across the base to Headquarters, 14 th Air Force. His positions included the Joint Space Operations Cen- ter, Special Technical Opera- tion, Non Commissioned Officer in Charge, Combat Plans Division and Special Missions Division. MSgt Aquin0 and his family made their last move to Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, CO where he was the Requirements Lead, Space Protection and Infor- mation Operations (IO) Re- quirements Division. He was responsible fqr defining AFSPC Space and IO re- quirements. MSgt Aquino is cur= rently the Science and Tech- nology Lead, Space Superi- ority Division, Require- ments Directorate, Head- quarters (HQs) Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. He is responsible for consolidating HQ AFSPC's $100M classified Science and Technology needs, authoring, coordinat- ing and publishing AFSPC guidance documents ensur- ing AFSPC/CC top Space Situational Awareness and Counter Space priorities met. MSgt Aquino holds a Masters of Science Degree in In- formation Technology Manage- ment. His military decorations include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Combat Readiness Medal; National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal; and the Air and Space Campaign Medal. Msgt Aquino has one son, Kolby, two daughters, AnaMarie and Lauren, and is married to the former Shery ! Rhode s of Tucson, AZ. Guest speaker for the event was New Mexico State Senator Johh Arthur Smith, above left. The event was completed with a 21 gun salute by the VFW Honor Guard.
