6 HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD 3rd Annual Courtesy information The 3rd Annual Jessie Darnell 3-on-3 Basketball tour- nament was once again a huge success. The two day event fea- tured over 140 games all run on schedule. Saturdays pool play set up Sundays brackets for each of the five age divisions. Competi- tion at this years tourney was at an all time high and some 30 plus games were decided in the final minute of the game that excited the large crowds that attended. Every team that entered played a minimum of foUr games with some playing as many as eightl The last few hours on Sun- day showcased a championship every half hour until the final men's champions were crowned. In the ten and under division two local teams played and the East Siders were able to defeat Jessie's Girls for 1st place. The 12 and under championship was the most exciting final of the tourney. The Jalapeno Grill of Lordsburg was able to avenge a pool play loss FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2010 Darnell against Morenci. The boys took the lead for good with a basket with 16 seconds left and a Morenci three-point shot fell short as time expired. The 16 and under boys'championship had the same storyline. The Young and Reckless from Lordsburg beat the Hustlerz from Deming also by two points. The two teams had met on Saturday with the Hustlerz winning in pool play. The 17 and older girls, championship had team Dutch from Silver City and the Legends from Lol;dsburg. Team Dutch quickly jumped on top and never looked back win- ning the title easily. The 17 and older boys' consolation final went down to the wire. The Bomb Squad of Las Cruces was able to hold off the Jessoz of Lordsburg for a one Point victory. The final game of the tournament featured a rematch of the 2009 Championship with the Floppies out of Silver City and SWAT of Lordsburg. The Floppies precison shooting and strong inside game Tournament fe once again proved too much for SWAT. The Floppies scored early and Often and were able to repeat as champions. The Floppies were able to placetwo players on the all tour- nament team. Eric Gonzalez and Jeff Powell joined Daniel Lazos out of Tucson, Ruben Mendoza and Jacob Esquivel out of Lordsburg and Sarah Sue Onley out of Silver to complete the all tourney squad. Event coordinators, DJ Saucedo and Jamie Diaz, would like to thank everyone involved that donated their time for two long days to make the toumament succeed. They would like "to thank the sPonsors, scorekeepers, refs, concession workers, clean up crew, and the 50 plus teams that entered. The tournament was able to raise enough money for the two $1000 scholarships that were awarded this year to Matt Aguilera and Serena Sanders, who both participated in the tourna- ment.
