6 HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2009 nn By DJ SAOCEDOILordsburg Few special people in the world can bring so many people together. Great things don't always come out of bad situations. This past weekend both were evident when the 2nd Annual Jessie Darnell 3-on-3 tournament was held. Some 42 teams participated in 121 games in front of a packed Maverick Gymnasium. Teamstraveled from Magdelena, Las Cruces, Silver City, Duncan, Morenci, Animas, and Tucson to com- pete. There were six divisions and all ages played from 5 years to 34 years old. Saturday featured round robin as well as league play in the older division. Sunday was single and double elimination tourna- ments that guaranteed every team playing a minimum of four games with some playing as many as nine. Beginning at 2:00 a champion was determined every half hour until the older boys division ended at 5 p.m. The Jessie Darnel1 tourney was a huge success 'with all pro- ceeds going to the One Heartbeat Scholarship to ,be given out to graduating athletes next year. This year's scholarships went to Julia Talavera and Justin Green, who received $1,000.00 each. A HUGE thank you to the numerous volunteers that guaran- teed the tourney ran so smooth and organized. Your tremendous help only makes us more excited to do it bigger and better next year!
