JB, V a I e n t e Petra Varela Ve r d u g o, was born in Petra mar- J.anos, Chihua- r i e d hua, Mexico on Petra Vsrela Verdugo B e r n a r d o ,pril 26, 1884. Renterla-Matriarch of the Renteria; they She married Valente Verdugo and Renterla were the parents Verdugo, also from Families of six sons: Jnos. To the Verdugo mar- Bernardo ("Benny") (1915- rge, five children were born: 195 l), Ramon (1917- ), Jse (1901-1944), Juan de Dios Manuel (1920- ), Francisco (1903-1973), Adolfo (1905- ("Kiko") (1922-2005), Daniel ("Neto") (1929-____). The family settled in Valedon, New Mexico, a mining community south of Lordsburg. After min- ing operations closed during the Great Depression, the family moved to Lordsburg. The chil- dren attended the old Wilson School. As they grew older, they dropped out of school to work in the cotton fields and tater in the re-opened mines. Those were difficult times for the large Verdugo/Renteria family. A strong work ethic was instilled in the children and sac- rifice was a part of their lives. The reunion was attended by 289 uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends of the family. It was a time to remember our Verdugo and Renteria ancestors and honor our living relatives.
