The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA), was enacted by the United States Congress in an attempt to determine the extent oL and develop solutions for. any problems schools may have with asbestos. Asbestos has been used as a building material for many years. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined primarily in Canada. South Africa, and the former U.S.S.R. Asbestos' properties made it an ideal building material for insulating, sound absorption, decorative plasters, fireproofing, and a variety of miscellaneous uses. There have been over 3.000 products made using asbestos materials. EPA began action to limit uses of asbestos products "in 1973 and most uses of asbestos products as building material~ were. banned in 1978. All Lordsburg Municipal School Buildings have recently been reinspected by a certified asbestos inspector, as required by AHERA. Our initial inspection was during school year 1988-89. and reinspections were conducted during school years 1991-92 1994-95. 1997-98, 2000-2001. 2003- 2004. and 2007-2008. Inspectors located, sampled, and rated the condition and hazard potential of all materials in our facilities suspected of containing asbestos An Asbestos Management Plan is in place for the Lordsburg Municipal Schools which includes: this notification letter, awareness training for all employees who may work around suspectedasbestos- containing materials, procedures designed to minimize the disturbance of asbestos-containing materi- als. and plans for reinspection and regular surveillance of the asbestos-containing materials. A copy of the Asbestos Management Plan is available for your review in the administrative office of each school and the district administrative office during regular business hours. David Flores. custo- dian at Central Elementary School, is the district's Asbestos Program Manager, and all inquiries regard- ing the Plan should be directed to him. Phone: 575-542-9222; M-F; 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 RM. We are implementing the Asbestos Management Plan. We are intent on not only complying with. but also exceeding federal, state, and local regulations in this area. We plan on taking whatever steps are necessary, to ensure your children, and all employees of the Lordsburg Schools have a healthy and safe environment in which to learn and work. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES. The Lordsburg Schools have made many preparations to deal with emergency situations that could happen when classes are in session. While we hope that a natural disaster or other serious incident. never occurs, our goal is to be prepared for any emergency. At all times, our first priority is to protect students and staff from harm. In order for our emergency-response plans to be effective, we depend on the cooperation and assistance of many people, such as the police and fire departments. We also depend on you, as parents to support our disaster-response efforts. Your cooperation is vital to helping us protect the safety and welfare of all children and school employees. Therefore. we ask parents to observe the following procedures in an emergency: 1. Do not telephone the school. We understand and respect your concern, but it is essential that the telephone system be available for emergency communications. 2. Tune your radio to 92.9 FM KSCQ; 95.1 FM KNUW: 97,7 FM KPSA; 102.9 FM KNFT. for emergency announcements and status reports. You will receive instructions on this station about where you should go and how/when you may pick up your child. 3. Do not come to the school until instructed to do so. It may be necessary to keep the streets and parking lot clear for emergency vehicles. If evacuation is required, students may be taken to a location away from the school. You will be notified of this through the media bulletins. 4. Talk to your children and emphasize how important it is for them m follow instructions from their teachers and school officials during any emergency 5. Carefully read all information you receive from the school. You may receive updates about our safety procedures from time to time: We are proud that the Lordsburg Schools are safe. and we are doing everything possible to keep it that way. We appreciate your cooperation and support. If you have any questions about this letter or other aspects of our safety procedures, please contact your child's principal.
