I80 EAST ' 538-5659 " www,hollywood.com ~July 30-Aug. 5.20J0 Coming Soon: The Soreerer's,Apprentice & Salt /n a recent intervie~t with David Ramos 1 was honored to hear his eventful ~tories of his childhood. As we sat over a cup or caf~ con lethe I learned that David Ramos grew up on a farm in the Cotton City area. He was his lather's shadow, from the time he was eight years old his futher taught him the tmportance oJ" values and work ethics. His upbringing and those lessons would someday be a positive guide to becoming a strong leader Ramos attended NMSU ,for two years but chose to return to the farm: it is through his farming where he has learned life's greatest lessons. Here is what was said: NM-P: Why should the citizens of Hidalgo County Vote for David Ramos as county commissioner? Ramos: Because I am for the people and I believe in prosperity. NM-P: What does it mean to be for the people? How ill you aid Hidalgo County's economy, education, and wllat is your input on immigration Reform? Ramos: /n order to understand any re~ion in the United States we must understand the State and Federal system and how it affects communities such as Animas. Lordsburg, Rodeo. Plavas, Cotton City, Virden and other town sites. Economic policy is broken down h'om unemployment, inflation, recession and the business cycle. My depth of understanding of economic policy is a rationale one. /n or, der to aid our county financially we must locate and sustain state and federa/ funds for the growth of our communities. As of right now there are approximately 15 million Americans who are unemployed. My first priority as county commissioner is to locate and secure state and federal monies through grants: then we can uphold and implement effective changes. For example we have a grave need for jobs, a pharmacy, and a clinic that provides 24-hour health care. housing and our education system. NM-P: Wha! knowledge do you possess that qualifies you to be skilled on infrastructure? Ramos: As a visionary leader, farmer and businessman. / am familiar of how the economic system works. /t takes more than ski/l when implementing infrastructure. One has to have a vision and an innate knowledge of how things work. For example: as a farmer, prior to planting seeds. 1 have to predict the outcome. If I do not p/an ahead for the end result the consequences can be disastrous. 1 have to make sure that I have an abundant supply of water, proper machinery, and if need be storage facilities." The crop is like a report card: it is there for everyone to see once it is ready to be harvested. But- acquiring knowledge is not enough; we have to be able to understand why our communities ate in need. We need to be able re analyze by looking at pros and cons before weattempt to problem solve. Once we have solved the problems such as sustain momes back into our county then we can create and design ideas. NM-P: How can you describe the concerns in our education s~stem? Ramos: Education is a main priority in Hidalgo County. As I stated before, the need for state and federal funds in our local education system is vital. 1 was fortunate to have been raised by both o t my parents and my grandfather Economics is a driving force, and in most cases both parents areforced re work. In addition, there are homes with single parents or no parents present. 7the lack of parents or guardians results in the lack of support for bur youth. This is a serious concern and our school boards should be addressing these concerns. We are in a new era. the cvber sphere. Our youth is being over stimulated by technology; video games, cell phones, text messaging, IPods..facebook, twitter and myspace, 1 know that our world is changmg and we are now living in a new day and age but when our youth cannot read or write I think we should be concerned, l.f our students want to be able To acquire a decent job they will have re be able to fill out an application and participate in an interview. /t is my understanding that both teachers end parents have control, in .[act students have very little. Parents and or guardians should be supporting our teachers and principals and not be against them. In fact research indicates that self-esteem in students does not guarantee success but achievable goals do. NM-P: With the entire uprising on SB 1070. do you think there is a better solution to immigration reform? Ramos: The face of America is changing and the fact that we live alon'g the Mexican border is a primary concern since Arizona Governor. Jan Brewer signed the SB 1070. Immigrants who are illegal are subject to deportation because that is the law. There are approximately 11 million undocumented aliens in the United States. Yet my concern is why we have such an influx of immigrants migrating to the United States. Hunger fs a driving Jorce but it has taken a different turn. Drug smuggling and violence are something we must not ignore. We have to look at two things here: border security and the path to citizenship, hnmigration reform calls for an in-depth took at federal policy such as NAFTA. quotas and tariffs, We are in desperate economic times as it is, rind the SB1070 law creates an umbrella of protection ~br police officers re exercise hate, racial profiling and discrimination. It will create a brutal subculture. The public will have a greater mistrust in law enforcement. According to the 2000 census the Spanish speaking population in the U.S. is well over 30 million, And we have vet to measure the Spanish speaking population 20/0 census, Imposing harsh taws is not (he answer: research and reform must be considered, As the evening came to a close 1 realized the positive impact David Ra~'nos' s upbringing had reflected his chosen path as a strong leader for our commuuities. He grew up on a farm and learned the value of da3~'s hard work under the gentle yet firm hand of his father. His mother, now 84 years old and still works 40 hour a week has a/so been a constant mottvator and inspiration ,for him to make changes ~ocia/ly and politically. Serving as.a county commissioner is not new re Ramos. He has served as the longest consecutive county commissioner and was re-elected 3 times. David Ramos is an asset to our county, his future and hope is that ~,e will prepare our children to lead in years to come. It was a DAVID privilege to have had such an astounding opportunity to sit and visit with Mr. Ramos. He is a pitlar fiw our community and he is for the people of Hidalgo County. Vamos con Ramos!
