1 0 HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD - FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2009 Erik Estrada joins VWK Agency, NM DOT, to tackle road safety Courtesy submission ActOr Erik Estrada has joined VWKLA, the Los Ange- les unit of Albuquerque's Vaughn Wedeen K u h n (VWK), as an executive producer on road safety advertising and market- ing cam- paigns. Estrada's goal is to market VWK's cre- ative services in the traffic safer y arena nationwide. As a repre- sentative of the firm. Erik will aggres- sively tackle the issue of road safety and help to assemble teams to spread the awareness further. Estrada initially began working with VWK last year on a campaign for Charter Com- munications and was brought back this year to work on the "100 Days and Nights of Sum- mer" campaign for the state of New Mexico, which'officially launched on June 1st. The "100 Days and Nights of Summer" campaign focuses on decreasing roadway trauma and increasing Erik JCallustodayJ Estrada public awareness about safe driving. Estrada is well-known for his role as Officer Frank Poncherelo, or "Punch." in the 1970's hit show CHiPs. VWK's choice to use an ac- tor. pgpu- lar for his role as a police of- ficer, was innovative and smart. Estrada's popularity and asso- ciation with law enforce- ment or- ganiza- tions has increased publ'ic awareness of the campaign and as a result, the rates of DWI related deaths have decreased. Together with the New Mexico Department of Trans- portation (NMDOT) and the Department of Public Safety, VWK'has designed numerous advertisements with Estrada as the main face behind the cam- paign through television, radio. and outdoor billboards In ad- dition, since the start of VWK's relationship with NMDOT four years ago, New Mexico's drunk driving statistics have improved dramatically. In 2004. there were 219 DWI related deaths on New Mexico's roadways. In 2008. this number was reduced to 143 - a 35% decrease. VWK hopes to capitalize on their successful campaign even further with Estrada at the fore- front. Thus far. his involve- ment has included an active pur- suit and many conferences with officials "around the nation His dedication and commitment to this cause as well as the demon- strated effectiveness of VWK's work in this area has helped save many lives and keep roads secure.
