While you are there, make sure to check out the rodeos which start Thursday evening with the barrel racing series finale, then come back Friday morning for the NEW this year rodeo, the junior ranch rodeo which will be a great event, showcasing all of Hidalgo Counties finest cowboys and cowgirls under 18 years old and when that rodeo is finished, the open ranch rodeo will commence as well. There will also be a jun- ior rodeo on Saturday morning and the Rodeo De Hidalgo Satur- day evening with a team roping on Sunday morning. If rodeos aren't necessarily your thing, that's ok because throughout the weekend there will be a mechanical bull, or you can play a game of Space Balls, and your kids will enjoy the blow up slides and bounce houses. There will also be a variety of vendors, exhibits and displays to walk around and see. After check- Exhibits sought for Sew it! Grow it! Show It! County Fair Submitted by JANET RICHARDSONIHCF The theme for the Hidalgo County Fair this year is Sew it! Grow it! Show it! Let's take pride in Hidalgo County by showing off our tal- ents in the Exhibit Building. En- courage each family member and your neighbors to enter exhibits in the Exhibit Building at the 2014 Hidalgo County Fair. There will be a Silent auc- tion with the pies, cakes, candies and cookies entered in the Culi- nary Department. All small food items should be entered on dis- posable plate inside a zip lock plastic bag. The Silent auction will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. The monies from the auction will benefit the Exhibit Building. Exhibit Building entries in- clude the following: Crops, Veg- etables, Fruits & Poultry Products, Flowers, Sewing, Fancywork, Cu- linary, Food Preservation, Art, Photography, Crafts, and 4-H. All entries will be accepted in the Ex- hibit Building at the fairgrounds from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM on Thursday, August 21, 2014- those in the Virden and Rodeo area, please take note of the time difference. All exhibits" must re- main in place until 6:00 PM on Saturday, August 23, 2014. All exhibits entered for com- petition in the fair building must be the exhibitor's own work. You can even buy a ticket or five to have a chance at winning the fair bucket. Also check out the animals in the livestock barn that our lo- cal 4H and FFA kids have worked hard to raise, feed and learn to show properly in order to earn their spot in the running for the awards, payouts and a spot in the livestock sale. You can even get in on buying an animal to stock your freezer with delicious home grown meat that will keep your bellies full all year long! Our newest attraction this year will be on Saturday August 23 starting at 11 in the morning; The Hidalgo County Mud Drags! The Mud Drags are open to any- one who wants to participate, with five classes to enter in. Rang- ing from stock, modified stock, super modified stock, tractor and Bike/ATV classes; there is a place for everyone!
