8 HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY. AUGUST 27. 2010 By Ldrenzo Alba. Jr. The Lordsburg Mavericks are coming off an 11-2 record in 2009. The losses came to district ri- val Tularosa .Wildcats in what not only gave the Wildcats the District Championship but also the State title. 2009 was another banner season for long-time head coach. Louie Baisa and his staff: but disap- pointing to lose to a district rival not once but twice. And for the hundreds of fans that made their way to Tularosa for the State Championship battle only to be heartbroken: redemption is their hope for the Mavericks. The Mavericks have 23 returning players from 2009. Only a handful of starters, two offensively and four defensive- ly have returned and not one returning starting lineman. There are 13 seniors returning and Coach Baisa will rely heavily on their leadership. "The seniors have been good leaders thus far, but must strive to be great leaders." said Head Coach Louis Baisa. There are also nine juniors mad 10 sophomores that will also have to step it up as well. Three freshmen are already making a buzz with the Mav- ericks coaching staff and will indeed contribute this season. "The upcoming season will be a dog fight for us. We have a pretty strong schedule so we will have to be at our best every game." said Coach Baisa. The Mavericks' goals may change fi'om year to year: ex- cept for winning district and state according to Basia. "Those are always our primary goals, with the district being a stepping stone. We expect the players to step up to the chal- lenge and continue to play hard on every play," added Baisa. The district is pretty well loaded this the realignment this year. Last year's state champions. Tularosa along with Estancia, Laguna Acoma and 'the Mavericks. Tularosa will be defending their district and state championships and will have plenty of players returning for the quest. If you recall from last year, they were big, fast and su- per aggressive. Laguna Acoma will also have quite the returning cast and should prove to be a tough challenge. The Mavericks also have a new stadium this sea- son and have already broken it in practicing and also hosted a scrimmage. "We are still getting used to prac- ticing on the artificial turL" said Coach Louis Baisa. "It's great! 1 expect for it to be an advantage for us since it reacts different than real grass," added Basia. Thus far the players and coaches as well as the student body at LHS have shown great appreciation for the new stadium. "This team can go all the way, if they continue to work hard." said coach Baisa'. "We have a tradition here at LHS and that should help us throughout the season. "Our return- ing players will have to lead and our young players will have to learn quickly so they can contribute.'" added Baisa. Regardless of the inexperience, one thing is ,cer- tain. Baisa and his coaching staff will have this team preparedfor their opener against Willcox. "We greatly appreciate community support year after year and we want to continue with, our tradi- tion and great seasons." exclaimed Baisa."These men will practice hard and play harder," concluded Baisa, THE OFFENSE Senior Bo Martinez will take his place in LHS history as he takes over at quarterback. The young man has been waiting patiently in the shad- ows and now it is his time to shine. Martinez is also a starter on de- fense, playing outside linebacker. His athleticism and intelli- gence will contribute greatly to the Mavericks offense this season. His backfield is loaded with talent. "Caesar Alvarez, Aiex =Ramirez, Dominick Rodriguez. Daniel--T~ala- vera. Kenny Evans and Joseph Jack- son are the men behind the wheel, Atvarez and Ramirez are big and powerful. The rest are speed- sters, hnpressive is Kenny Ev- ans with deceptive speed. He's the smallest of the bunch but will definitely make an impact. Although the Mavericks are not generally a throwing team, the3 have a few players with hands this season. Quarterback Bo Martinez will look to the likes of Alan Landeros, Abel Lira. Boaz Sali- nas and Michael De La Garza. The offensive line is completely new with not one returning player from last year's starters. And only a couple of offensive linemen have any varsity experience. "Our offensive line is going to have to grow up fast in order for us to BLACK MAG have any success running e ball.'" said coach Baisa. "As coaches. we knew this coming in and this will be the most challenging task for us as coaches." added Baisa. Regardless of the ~alent in the backfield, the offensive line will either make or break this offense. This will definitely be a challenge for line coach Brian Culberson. Cul- berson is more than capable of turn- ing this line into something special. IC DEFENSE The Mavericks defense will be The the strengtfi of the team once defensive again this year. Last year the line is the least Mavericks only allowed an average of nine points a game [or the excep- tion of the state championship game. They will be strong again this sea- son with some strong linebackers. including Caesar Alvarez. Bo Mar- tinez and Alex Ramirez. They also have some depth in the defensive backfield that covered well last year but more importantly made tackles. Photos by Lorenzo Alba.
