HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011 5 Lady Mavericks beat Cobre, take third in Morenci Tournamc,nt Courtesy information The Lady Mavericks were off to a positive start hosting the Cobre Indians at home last Tues- day. Game 1 had the Lady Maver- icks fired UP and ready to play. The Lady Mavericks de- feated Cobre with a score of 27-25. They struggled with serving dur- ing this game, missing a few key points by missed serves. Racelle Gomez set up Tonya Burrola to end the game with a kill. Tonya Kristine Estrada-AIITourna- Burrola ertded up mentTeam, MorenciTourna- with 2 kills for the. ment night and 1 ace serve. "It is always good to win game one and set the tone for the rest of the night," said Coach Katie LeMaster. 'In game 2 there were se,eral long rallies and once again the Lady Mavs came out on top with a score of 25-21. This time Rachelle Gomez set up Michelle Thomas for a kill to end the match. Michelle Thomas ended up with 4 kills for the night. Kristine Estrada put the final exclamation point on game 3 with a huge hit that was a kill. Score 2,5-23. Kristine Estrada ended up with 15 kills for the night. Adding to the overall of- fense Karissa Mur.illo and Rachelle Gomez each had 5 kills, Selina Munoz with 2 kills and 2 ace serves. Throughout the night servers were scoring points with tough serves and ace serves. Sabrina Medina and Karissa Murillo had 2 ace serves for the evening. Selina Munoz and Katy Carbajal played tough defense in the back row coming up with sev- eral digs and good passes. "Overall the Lady Mavericks played a strong game," LeMaster said. "They never gave up and finished strong. We would like to thank all of the fans who showed up and supported the Lady'Mavericks in their home opener. We would also like to thank the volleyball parents who ran our concession stand." The JV Lady Mavericks lost to Cobre in two games, 21-25 and 17-25. According to Coach Codi Lark, "The play- ers have been working hard at improving and are learning, a lot. I am proud of how they performed." Morenci Tournament The morning started very early for the Lady Mavericks with the first game of pool play at 8 a.m. Pool play consisted of play- ing 5 teams, one game to 30 points in 20 minutes with a 5 minute break in between games. The Mavs took on Duncan and came out strong for the first couple of points in the game. Duncan came up with a few ace serves and from then on it fins back and forth. Unfortunately the Lady Mavericks ran out of time and Duncan cam out on top with a score of 30-26. Next up the Lady Mavericks faced Piton. Again it was a battle from the start with big hits from the Mavs and Pima. The 20 min- utes ran out and the score had Pima winning 29-27. Next up Lordsburg and Animus. The Maverick offense was clicking and the 'front row, Kristine, Karissa, Selina,Tonya and Michelleconnected with setter Rachelle for numerous kills and stuff blocks to shut Animus down. The Lady Mavericks beat Animus 30-14. In the next match, Lordsburg faced Morenci and Morenci won 30-20. The final game of pool play Lordsburg played Ft. Tho- mas. They had several ace serves which gave them breathing room, winning the game 30-17. After the Lady Mavericks fin- ished up pool play bracket play would begin with the Mavs be- ing seated as the 3rd team. The Lady Mavericks would play Animus in a best 2 out of 3 games to 21 points. In game 1 they came out serving strong Michelle Tho- mas had 2 ace serves for the night and Kristine Estrada had 1 ace serve. Hitters found holes in Animus' defense and were able to score points off of kills. Kristine Estrada and Selina Munoz led the team with 7 kills, Tonya Burrola had 6 kills, Karjssa Murillo had 3 kills, Michelle Thomas had 2 kills and Rachelle Gomez had one kill. Rachelle has done a great job of running the offense as a setter and spreading the hits throughout the team. Score of 21- 17 Lady Mavericks win. In Game 2 they were off to a slow start with several miscom- munications in passing. Once they overcame that obstacle the Mavericks were off. Blockers, Michelle Thomas and Rachelle Gomez had 3 stuff blocks to give Animus some trouble at the net. Sabrina Medina and Ashley Martinez came in the game and had some good passes to keep the ball alive. The game ended with the Mavericks winning 21-19. Next up the Lady Maver- icks would face Morenci the #2 team. In:game 1 they struggled and were not able to get good passes to the setter to then run an effective offense. As the game progressed passing did improve and gave the girls a chance to hit some balls. Kristine Estrada led the team in kills with 8, followed by Selina Munoz with 7 kills, Karissa and Tonya each had 3 kills and Michelle had 1 kill. Morenci ended up with the win 14-21. In Game 2 passing improved along with blocking. Blockers, Michelle, Kristine, Karissa and Rachelle were able to get the tim- ing down and shut down Morenci's hitters for a couple of plays. Karissa Murillo had 3 stuff blocks, Michelle, Kristine and Rachelle each had 1 stuff block. Katy Carbajal and Miranda Gomez came in a provided solid passing and a few good serves. Unfortunately Morenci once again pushed hard and won 24-18. This put the Lady Mavericks into the 3rd place playoff game facing Ft. Thomas. The Lady Mavericks came out very strong in game 1 win- ning 21-16. They served very well with Tonya Burrola;' MichelleThomas, and Katy Carbajal having 2 ace serves apiece. Game 2 saw several lead . changes in the game and Ft. Thomas won 21-19. So onto game 3 where the score would only go to 15. This is when the Lady Maverick offense came alive with Kristine Estrada lead- ing the team with 11 kills, Michelle and Selina had 8 kills each;Tonya Burrola had 6 kills, Karissa Murillo had 5 kills and Rachelle Gomez had 2 kills. The Lady Mavericks kept their composure as the game stayed within ,a few points of each other, Finally the Lady Mavericks finished strong and won 16-14. This win placed the Lady Mavericks in 3rd place for the tournament, Kristine Estrada was named to the All-Tournament team. "We are making good strides in creating a complete offense," LeMaster said. "We need to not let down in any areas of our game in order to go after our goals for the year." 2011 By RACHEL STONEIHic/a/go County Herald Lady Panthers take on Cougars On Tuesday August 30 th, the Animas Lady Panthers took on the San Simon Cougars.
