The visiting Cobre Indians came to the state of the art Mav- erick stadium looking to ruin the Maverick's Homecoming. The Mavericks had other plans. The action started out with both defenses holding strong with the help of many penalties. Both offenses moved the ball well yet a turnover or a penalty always seemed to put an end to the drives. The score at the end of the 1 't, 0-0. The 2 nd quarter was a whole lot of the same, for Cobre. The Mavericks generated a drive with good ground and pound running and a good passing attack, some- thing new for the Mavericks. The drive ended in a hard earned 4 yard touchdown run by senior fullback, Caesar Alvarez. The ex- tra point failed so the score showed 6-0. The Mavericks de- fense held like a wall after that, and with the help of multiple failed 4 h down conversions by Cobre, field position favored the Mavericks. With three seconds left in the half, Mavericks line- backer, Dominick Rodriguez, caused a fumble and sophomore D.D. Murillo picked it up and scampered 17 yards into the end zone as the time expired, bring- ing the score at half 13-0. The Mavericks didn't let the homecoming festivities distract them and came out with just as much intensity, if not more, scor- ing right away on a 45 yard scurry into the end zone by junior run- ning back, Daniel Talavera, bring- ing the score 1'9-0. Throughout the rest of the game, the "Black Magic Defense" held up, except for some trickery by Cobre, when they scored on a halfback pass, bringing the score to 19-6. The Indians tried an onside kick, but the Mavericks recovered it, end- ing all hope for the Indians. The final score, 19-6, had the Maver- icks winning the 2010 Home- coming game. Leading the Mavericks in defense, was senior Ceaser Alveraz with 19 total tackles, fol- lowed by teammates Chris Sanchez and Alex Ramirez each contributing with 10 each. On the offensive side, leading the Mavs in rushing was a combination of senior quarterback Bo Martinez and Junior Daniel Talavera with 52 yards. The Mavericks have a bye this week but will be back in ac- tion next week when they face the T or C Tigers.
