I keep up with what's going on in Lordsburg. My eyesight and my hearing are not the best. but thankfully, I am quite mentally alert. These are my comments which I have asked a friend to write for me. I don't approve of my de- ceased husband's name. 'Alan A. Koff. being used by people who think he would have been more worthy of having our new city hall named after him. Like me. Alan wouldn't be pleased either with the criticism of Arthur Clark Smith. an honorable man who served us well for more than 20 years, far longer than any other mayor in our history, including my husband. Mayors Alan A. Koff and Clark Smith both shared the same vision for a better Lordsburg. Like Alan. Clark's passion was economic development. He and Clark both understood that it takes months and months of lay- ing the groundwork of welcom- ing new businesses so that inves- tors are willing to make financial investments in Lordsburg. Economic development is more than having the money to invest. It takes a lot of work to convince investors that invest- ment in Lordsburg will result in a good profit for them. I'm glad that people are thinking about the importance of having a dean town because appearances count a lot towards future economic development. I have known Clark Smith since he was a boy. I've supported his campaigns for Mayor because 1 believe he was the right person for a tough job.. I personally know how his many years of public ser- vice affected his family. It's been very disappointing to listen as' letters to the Editor are read to me which devote so much time to talk about why Clark's name and his photograph should be removed from the new building. What a waste of time, effort and MONEY People will always disagree in politics. Re- moving Mayor Smith's name and photo ,gill not do anything to tmprove life for the citizens of Lordsburg. It's so easy to criticize. Per- haps we should all ask ourselves, what have 1 done to improve Lordsburg? I hope the City Coun- cil instead will spend time on more important matters facing our community. is/Marshallene G. Koff Lordsburg NOTES FROM THE SUNSHtNE HAVEN] Clarification ByLORENZO ALBA, JR.
