HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 2010., 7 Just A Thought " May the winds be always at your baCk.,.you deserve it lyrics, is entirely a blessing put te;2U Siy:uThe i: g2:s 12l:<i[hr RickKra one needs to be blessed. I think everyone wants to be blessed. I don't think it is possible to over bless a person. Further, I don't think we bless one another enough. So I would like you to be blessed today. -Blessings are spo- ken over people, places, and even pets. Webster dictionary defines blessing as "I. The act of one who blesses. 2. A declaration of divine favor, or an invocation imploring divine favor on some or sometliing; a benedic- tion; a wish of happi- ness pronounces. 3. A means of happiness: that which promotes prosperity and welfare; a beneficent gift. 4. A gift. 5. Grateful praise or worship." All of these definitions make the act of blessing a positive ac- tion towards the recipient. There is a song by Bob Dylan, written in 1973 and first recorded in 1974 that, through its By RICK KRAFT Okay, just sit back and relax. I know you deserve it You just finished a long week. Where ever you are, whatever lies ahead for your day or week. regardless of what has you anxious or uptight right now. just inhale slowly, exhale gently and relax Clear your mind of your worries and let's walk a few steps to- gether. And please al- low me speak blessings over you. It is my de- sire that you receive every blessing possible that you can receive. When someone says to you "God bless you." it is generally in the context of a sneeze. As a matter of fact, the best way I know to have a stranger bless me is to get near the stranger and then sneeze. Which begs the question, "Why does it take a sneeze for one person to bless another?" Anyhow, I think that every- Students participate in World Record Reading [)ay On October 7th Southside Elementary School students in Lordsburg read "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats, as part of a World Record Reading Day.The goal was to have as many people world- wide reading the same book on the same day to set a world record. The lyrics are as follows: May God bless and keep you always. May your wishes all come true. May you always do for others and let others do for you. May you build ladder to the stars and climb onevery rung. May you stay forever young. May you grow up to be righ- teous. May you grow up to be true. May you always know the truth and see the lights surround- ing you. May you always be coura- geous, stand upright and be strong May you stay forever young. May your hands always be busy. May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift. May your heart always be joyful. May your song always be sung. May you stay forever young Bob Dylan, after becoming a legend early in his career, had taken eight years off from tour- ing and in 1974 went back onto the circuit with his old backup group, "The Band." During these eight years. Mr. Dylan had be- come a father. This song was writ- ten as a blessing from a parent to a child. Who more would want to speak a blessing on a child than his or her parent? We need to bless our children often and regularly. We bless our children by sharing positive and encouraging thoughts with them about where they are in life and where they are headed. A blessing is not a blessing if it never leaves your mind. It must be spoken or otherwise shared. We should not ask the ques- tion, "How can I get blessed to- day?," but the question, "How can I bless others today?" Tell those closest to you that you love them. that you are proud of them. High- light the positives in others for them. Tell them you appreciate them. thank them for what they do to make a positive difference. Bless them. In the Bible at Psalm 67:1 one of many blessings in the Bible is shared, "May God be gra- cious to you and bless you and make his face shine upo n you." My challenge to you today is to speak blessings over others regularly and as often as you are able. Whether you are speaking to family or to a stranger, whether you are talking to a two year old or a ninety-two year old. If the Republicans win then they will dominate our county and set the agenda once again. As I take a close look at our County Commissioner posi- tions I fear we will have a di- lemma on our hands. If Darr Shannon who has no concept of economic strat- egy, performing analysis, or evaluating situation wins for county commissioner then we are in grave danger. Her ideas are not rational. Do we dare ask how she will create jobs? Will her response be, "All men are created equal?" As the daugh- ter of a Mexican immigrant. I know too well that "Not all men are created equal" Unlike her opponent, Larry Martinez has spent a lifetime on problem solving and understands the ide- ology of social justice. Perhaps Shannon's next poetic debut on "Vote for the Person" in this week's Herald will be on how the moon is made of cheese. If Ed Kerr wins then the poor and innocent Hispanic, Latino/a, Chicano/a Mexican/a like me will be profiled once again, bring- ing back the demons from the past. Mr. Kerr made it clear that border security is the most impor- tant issue facing our county, but his reasoning is flawed. The most pressing issues in our county are the lack of jobs and strong eco- nomic development strategies. In the area of border security Mr. Kerr's has no control over the drug cartels. It is not a war against ranchers on the border; the war is a power struggle among the drug families. The solutions are not simple law enforcement strate- gies. When it comes to drug car- tels we have to look also at the queso de la Luna of Cheese law of supply and demand His opponent, David Ramos is more focused on the county's economic status. Ramos has researched and thought very careful about border security; in fact he has mapped out the key cartel entities and is work- ing with congressional leaders at the national level. As an educator, Kerr should under- stand such concepts. What does either Repub- lican candidate know about our county budget, taxes, eco- nomic policy and immigration issues? Perhaps Shannon and Kerr should have spent more time learning from citizens and what, we think the real issues are. instead of trying to make an impression and use North park in an attempt to gain the Hispanic votes. We will not be bought regardless of what the moon is made of. Harry has brought millions in funding to projects in diverse areas of southern New Mexico, and he has come to Hidalgo County District in such a short period of time than what Steve Pearce did during his whole three prior terms in office. The following are some of the facts on Veteran issues that Harry has accomplished in such a short time. In Harry Teague. veterans have an advocate on the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Harry Teague took up the challenge and was a force in get- ting Congress to pass a measure called "'advanced appropria- tions." Now it's a law, so VA clin- ics in Artesia and Hobbs don't have to worry about funding less-veteran programs and pro- grams to prevent veterans from becoming homeless. Harry Teague also intro- duced a bill called for mental- health.assessments for troops being sent to and coming back from combat. This helps ensure that no one falls through the cracks when they need help the most .Harry Teague earned the support of the veterans of For- eign Wars Political A:tion Committee, and he laas aade sure that his office is ,open to veterans and helping them get their VA claims resolved.
