HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2014 5 Mavericks beat MVCS S0nblazers, 56-28 Courtesy submission The Lordsburg Mavericks beat the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers in Las Cruces 56-28 on Saturday, November 1. The Mavericks won their second district game of the season to up their overall record to 8-1 and district record 2-0. With the win, the Mavericks assured them- selves of a state playoff berth. The offense had their most productive outing of the season with 26 first downs and 606 yards of offense. The MaTs rushed for 395 yards on 46 carries and had 211 yards passing on 15 out of 24 comple- tions. The defense held the SonBtazers to a total of 285 yards, 261 of those yards passing. Running back Raymond Saucedo led the offense with 146 yards rushing on 14 Carries and 2 touchdown and caught 3 passes for 18 yards. Quarterback Johnny Plowman rushed for 141 yards on 11 Carries and 2 touchdowns to go with 14 pass completions on 23 attempts for 211 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Low-Fat Milk rushed for 1 touchdown and caught 1 pass for 6 yards and was perfect on PAT kicks with 8 out of 8. Running back Felix Jimenez ran for 29 yards on 8 carries, Greg Cuevas for 25 yards on 3 carries. Ramon Retana caught 4 passes for 31 yards, Jacob Esquivel caught 2 passes for 66 yards and one touchdown to go with 2 runs for 6 yards, Hondo Estrada had 44 yards on 2 catches and 2 runs for 8 yards and a touchdown, Jaime Artiaga had 2 catches for 37 yards and a touchdown, and Joseph Gonzales one catch for 9 yards. The offensive line did a tre- mendous job of blocking throughout the game opening running lanes and protecting the quarterback on passes. Offensive linemen are Anthony Tovar, Cameron DeFoor, Gabriel Granado, Gage Elias, Chris Arambula, Randy Rodriguez, Jon Saucedo, and Zabien Santoyo. The defense played well most of the game. They were led again by inside linebacker Jacob Esquivel with 8 tackles and a caused fumble. Johnny Plowman had 6 tackles. Defensive backs Ramon Retana and Greg Cuevas both had 5 tackles with Retana having an interception on a 2 point conversion try by the SonBlazers. Hondo Estrada and Jeremie Salazar both had 4 tack- les. Salazar had 2 quarterback sacks and Estrada one. Anthony Tovar had 2 quarterback sacks to go with 3 tackles. Cameron DeFoor, Jon Saucedo, and Jaime Artiaga each recorded 2 tackles. Orion Moreno had 1 tackle and a pass deflection. Gabriel Granado recovered the fumble caused by Esquivel. The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday, November 7 as they travel to Tularosa and play for the District Championship.
