Buffalo Soldier historic sites tour at. Fort Huachuca Nov. 20 Submitted by CITY OF SIERRA VISTA Learn more about the renowned Buffalo Soldiers, the All-Black unit stationed on Fort Huachuca in the late 1800s through the turn of the Century, by taking a tour with the Southwesl Association of Buf- falo Soldiers (SWABS). Children are welcome, as this informative and educational excursion is appropriate for children over age 12. The tours of the Buffalo Soldier historic sites are held the third Saturday of each month, and participants are invited to meet at the City of Sierra Vista's Visitor Center. located in the Oscar Yrun Com- munity Center at 3020 East Tacoma. and board a bus for the tour. Following an overview of the history of the Buffalo Soldiers at Brown Parade Field, the tour continues to several historic sites on the Post. One of the sites on the tour is the Black Officers' Club, where celebrated entertainers Dinah Shore and Lena Home performed on stage, and Joe Louis boxed. This building is currently in disrepair and the SWABS are continuing to raise funds for the restoration of this site. Fort Huachuca served as the home station for the Buffalo Sol- diers for nearly-53 continuous years and their service and accom- plishments are legendary. Not only were the endeavors of the Buffalo Soldiers well known during the Indian Wars, the soldiers also joined General "Black Jack" Pershing in the Punitive Expedition into Mexico.
