~- r- AJ- mdhiJ~.M41iMIIvMIg~= ~ ~.J~,,, ~ A,,o~ HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2011 3 SBDC Prospects of Arab economies in light of the Arab Spring, Part II By AHMED OULAD EL FAKIR Economic freedom is one of the most important indicators of the level of the prevailing cir- cumstances and conditions in all countries and especially in Arab countries. If this indicator was dire, it will reflect the situation in which this country lives. And economic and social freedom are only a mirror of the political situ- ation marred by a lot of short- comings which culminated in a violent reaction used by the Arab governments against popular re- volts during what became known as the "Arab Spring." Following is Part 2 of Mr. Fakir' s analysis. The rate of unemployment in all the Arab countries is close to 15%, which confirms that the de- mands were focused on political and human rights rather than economic. Another indicator can be used to describe the case of the Arab economies and standard of living of their citizens: that is GDP per capita current dollar for these countries. Thus, the table below shows the order of the Arab countries according to this indi- cator: there was a fair distribution of the wealth of these countries or there is a small percentage of the population that monopolizes a large part of the wealth of each country separately. This drawing shows the re- markable improvement that was known in 2009, due to the rev- enues of the Gulf oil exporters, which rose dramatically thanks to high oil prices in global mar- kets. In terms of demographics. I always remember that Tunisian man who told a television chan- nel that they rely on young people because "we became old" So, any solution to the problems of the Arab countries must have to take into account this group of age, which is a cornerstone in the structure of Arab countries population. Now, because of the current Arab world mobility not only by youth but by all age groups, all Arab regimes must act to contain the situation by introducing economic, social and political reforms necessary to do so, such as creating opportunities for the unemployed young men, equi- table division of wealth, unem- 1 - the establishment of a com- mon European market under the Treaty of Rome in 1957 among 6 countries - at first - to allow goods transportation freedom between Member States;, 2 - the signature of the Schengen Treatyin 1997, which allows free- dom of movement of persons in all the space between the signa- tories of the Convention; 3 - the creation of a single cur- rency "the Euro" starting from January 1999 and the rise of these countries to 25 countries dealing with Euro as the currency in cash. Is it possible to clone the experience in European unity and integration among the Arab coun- tries? These aspirations of dan- gers toured all the Arab peoples except the leaders. We wish to see that we are Arab citizens from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf. But conflicts of interest in the Arab and Arab-Israeli conflict and the situation of the Palestinian cause as well as foreign interference in some Arab countries are all rea- sons for not achieving the Arab dream. I propose that the Arab States begin to allow freedom to people, then move on to the goods, then DTMS Spelling Bee Dugan-Tarango Middle School held a Spelling Bee, with 17 stu- dents Ibarticipating.
