HIDALGO COUNTY HERALD FRIDAY r DECEMBER 10 2010 5 Panthers take part in Cliff Tournament they fell a little short, barley loos- ing the game by 6 points. In their last game, The Panthers faced Cobre. This game went in the Panthers&apos; favor, though, and they came out on top, winning by 30 points. Channing Moore, a senior, made the Cliff Round-Up All Tournament team. The boys will be traveling to Cloudcroft this next weekend with the girls to By ELIZABETH RICHINS/ Hidalgo County Herald The Animas Panthers' boy basketball team traveled to Cliff this last weekend to take part in the' annual Cliff Round-up. The tournamefft lasted Thursday-Sat- urday, December 2-4. The "Pan- thers met up with Academia Juarez in the first round, and lost after a tough game. This put Animas against Grady hext, and AHS Panthers take 4 th in participate in the Cloudcroft bas- ketball tournament. Lady-Maverick Fiesta By ELIZABETH RICHINS/ Hidalgo County Herald The Animas Lady Panthers participated in the Lady Maver- ick Fiesta this pa. st weekend. The tournament was held in the Lordsburg High School gym, The Panthers were matched up with Cobre for their first game, and they easily beat the Lady In- dians; 70-20. - In their next game, Animas was matched up with Lordsburg. The game was long and in- tense, both teams playing extremely well. The Panthers fell a little short, though, and lost to the Lady Mavs in the end. Merrilee Richardson (Senior) made the Lady Fiesta All Tournament team . up against the Hatch Valley Bears' for 3: d and 4 'h place. The Bears jumped ahead, leading the Pan- thers by quite a bit. Animas made a come-back just in time, though, and the game went into overtime. Both teams were tied up in overtime, and the Hatch Bears made a shot right at the buzzer, putting the Panthers in 4 th place for the tournament. Overall the Lady Panthers played well, and Merrilee Richardson, a senior, made the All-Tournament team. Panthers host Valley Union By ELIZABETH RICHINS/ Hidalgo County Herald The Mighty Panther Basket- ball teams were in action on Tues- day, November 30, as they hosted all four (JV-Varsity) teams from Valley Union. Animas played well and took all four wins. The JV girls started the night with a win, taking care of busi- ness and beating the Lady Devils Next to play were the JV boys. They also played hard and came out on top. The score of that game was 45-35. The Varsity girls and boys.' games were fun ones to watch. The girls' game ended with a Pan- ther victory, 48-27 The boys' game was a little closer, but Animas was able to keep the lead and take the win, 53-41. Lady Mavericks do well in their Fiesta By' SELINTMUNOZlLHS game, leading most of it, until fi- and our team chemistry is better The Lady Mavericks 15 'h Annual Fiesta took place last weekend. The Mavs won the first round of the tournament against Academia Juarez in a very impres- sive manner. The semi-final game against Animas was a brutal duel to the finish, but the Lady Mavs came out on top and took the win to the championship. The championship game was a hyped up match with the undefeated powerhouses of the tournament, Lordsburg and Cliff. The Lady Mavs controlled the Coat Drive nal seconds of the 4 th quarter when Cliff came back and took lead. The Lady Mavs came up short on the last shot, losing, 47- 46. Rachelle Gomez, Karissa Murillo, and Sarah Atilano had the honors of making the All- Tournament team. The Lady Mavericks are looking to build on the momen- tum from volleyball and take ad- vantage of'strong cast of experi- eoced upper classmen. "I expect us to be good this season. We are experienced, ,fast than ever," said senior, Sarah/ Atilano. The Lady Mavs are still short on height, but their speed, talent and heart make up for it. Though losing three strong starters, last year's lower classmen who are' now upper classmn are ready tO take a leadership role. Returning seniors, Alisha Gonzalez and Sa- rah Atilano look to lead the team with a strong cast of contributing juniors; Rachelle Gomez, Karissa Murillo and sophomore Selina Munoz. being held by AmeriCorps By ELIZABETH RICHINS/ Hida/go County Hera/d Channing Moore and Damien Janzen, two of Animas' AmeriCorps kids, are having a coat drive. They are collecting coats for underprivileged youth, to give to them this winter sea- son. If you have any coats you would like to donate, please see one of these boys or drop off your coats to a coat collecting box.
