Gatcfa. this week clarified the intent of the Hispanic Education Act re- cently proposed by Governor Richardson to be the first of its kind in the nation. Hispanics make up 56% of the K-12 student population in-New Mexico. "Historically, Hispanic stu- dents suffer from a persistent achievemenl gap. As a minority- majority state, Hispanic education achievement and graduation rates a significant impact on the New Mexico economy," said Garcfa."we know that people who do not receive a high school diploma are also overrepresented in critical health areas like diabe- tes, in prisons, and are more likely tO be dependent on social ser- vices. It is an economic and moral imperative to ensure we have con- sistent focus on this group." The Act proposal is still un- der development with members of the New Mexico legislature and would not include any additional state funding. The Act, being modeled after the Indian Educa- tion Act would include three ma!n focus areas: 1. Codify a formal Hispanic Advisory Council that would in- stitutionalize statewide commu- nity engagemerit. 2. Require the Public Educa- tion Department to provide an annual P-20 status report on the state of Hispanic education. 3..Require districts and schools to: ensure and m6asure Lordsburg High School Girls Basketball 2009-2010 Opponent Time Scrimmage vs. 14'" LadY Maverick Fiesta (V) T.B.A. ' @ Silver (JV-V) 5:30/7:00 PM vs. San Simon, AZ (Jr) 5:30 PM vs. Duncan, AZ.
