Amanda Lopez. a school mental health advocate for the New Mexico Department of Health in southwestern New Mexico, said while the holidays are traditionally a time of celebra- tion, for many people the season can bring on additional stress, a sense of loneliness and in some cases depression. "This time of year can be es- pecially hard on people who are dealing with a personal crisis Mavs to play at home Thursday and Friday The Lordsburg High School Mavericks boys basketball team will host its first home games this Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, December 16, the Mavericks will take on the Animas Panthers at 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. Friday's game action will be against the number one ranked Cliff Cowboys. JV will play at 5:00 p.m. and the varsity will tip off at 6:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend. such as coping- with the loss of a loved one or worrying about their finances because of the current economic situation" Lopez said. Lopez offers the following tips-for families to help reduce holiday stress: Plan a budget. Many people overspend during the holiday season, which can add to their stress. Take the time to fig- ure out how" much you can realis- tically spend a~ad stick to that budget. Watch what yon eat. The holidays are atime when people tend to over indulge in sweets and fatty foods. You can enjoy the holiday foods in mod- eration and still eat a balanced diet. Don't skip your work- out. Between holiday parties, last minute shopping and the long list of activities that come up around this time of year, people often sac- rifice the time usually reserved for exercising. Getting plenty of ex- ercise can help reduce stress and give you more energy to get through the day. Get help if you need it. Talk to your physician or mental health professional if you are ex- periencing the signs of depres- sion. Talk to your friends and family about your feelings and don't be afraid to ask for help. The games took place in the Animas High School Gym. The JV girls were first to play, and they had their hands full. The game was very close the whole time, and the Panthers trailed at the end. When it didn't look like Animas could come back, they did, taking the win 39-38. The JV boys' game wasn't as close, as the Pan- thers handled the Wildkats and took the victory, 45-20. In the Varsity girls' game, things were good for Animas as well. The game was tight at times, but the Lady Panthers snatched the win. leaving the final score 38-27. For the last game of the night, the Varsity boys took the floor. In a fast-moving game, the Panthers were able to beat the Wildkats 47-33. The New Mexico Depart- ment of Health spends about $500.000 each year to prevent suicides in New Mexico. The Department also funds the New Mexico Suicide Prevention Coa- lition for providing training, cre- ating awareness and working with survivors. In the 2nd half. though, Cliff made a comeback, and beat the Panthers By ELIZABETH RICHINSI Hidalgo County Herald The Animas boys and girls Varsity teams traveled to Cloudcroft this past weekend to take part in the Mountain Top Basketball Tourna- ment. Other partici- pating teams were Gateway Christian. Cloudcroft Varsity, Cloudcroft JV, Capitan. Dexter, and Cliff. On the girls' side of the bracket, Animas was matched against Gateway Christian on Thursday. Tlaey easily took that game, beating the warriors 52-30. On Friday, the Lady Panthers faced - Capitan. They were able to pull off another win, so this put Animas in the Champi- onship game on Saturday against the Cliff Cowgirls. The game was by only 4 points. The Lady Pan- thers took 2"d place in the Tour- nament. On the boys' sidle, the Pail- thers played Cloudcroft JV right off, and took the win 65-19. Then they faced Cloudcroft Varsity. The game was close, as both teams scored left and right. But, Animas was able to find a spark, and pull of the win in die end. In the Champio.n- ship game. the Pan- thers faced the Cliff Cowboys. They played tough against them, but took home 2"d place. Both teams played extremely well in the tourna- ment. Those who made the All Tourna- ment Team were Kayla Shelton scores 2 Merrilee Richardson against Gateway Christian and Karina Sarillano from the girls' team, and Gabriel Hernandez and Channing Moore from the boys' team. Lady finish up 2010 and look forward to On Monday, December 6'h, the Lady Dogies traveled to Morenci. The 7th grade won 21 tO 15. Scorers for this game were Jen- nifer Gonzalez with 9 points, Da- kota UliBarri with'4 points, Enlma Salinas and Mikayla Munoz with 3 points, and Loreua Martinez with 2 points. The 8th grade lost to Morenci 37 to 27. Scorers for this game were Taylor Hayes with 12 points, Rishae Allen with 6 points, Jennifer Gonzalez with 2 points, and Kaitlin Hackworth. Micayla Chavez. and Veronica Eckert with 2 points. On Thursday, December 9th, the Lady Dogies traveled to Sil- ver to take on the Lady Broncos once again. The 7th grade lost 30 to 18. Scorers for this game were Emma Salinas and Micayla Chavez with 4 points. Jennifer Gonzalez and Veronica Eckert with 3 points, Mikayla Munoz with 2 points and Lorena Martinez and Ka3?ci Alvarez with 1 point. The 8th grade also lost to the Lady Broncos 28 to 24. Scorers for this game were Rishae Allen with 8 points. Alex Silva with 7 points, Kaitlin Hackworth. Sierra Ortega, Jennifer Gonzalez. and Taylor Hayes all had 2 points and Emma Salinas had l point. On Saturday, December 11~, the Lady Dogies hosted Snell for their last game of the year. The 7~ grade defeated Snell 57 to 31. This was a very exciting game because for the first time all the 7'~ grade players scored in a game. Scorers for this game were Jen- nifer Gonzalez with 13 points, Emma,Salinas with 12 points, Loreiia Martinez and Kaitlin Hackworth with 8 points. Da- kota Ulibarri With 6 points, Mikavla Munoz with 4 points, Micayla Chavez with 3 points, Kayci Alvarez with 2 points and Taylor Gandara with 1 point. The 8th grade lost to Snell 30 to 33. Scorers were Taylor Hayes With 8 points. Sierra Ortega and Jennifer Gonzalez with 7 points, Monet Neave with 4 point's, Alex Silva with-3 poruts, and Jackie Saenz with 2 points. Lady Dogie Basketball 2010 was very exciting for the players as well as their fans. They had many nail biting games and they really showed the talent that they have. 'The Lady Dogies are looking for- ,ward to 2011 and plan to be just as successful and if you missed out in 2010 than you must make it in 2011 to cheer them on. The Lady Dogies will kick off their 2011 season by hosting Cliff on Tuesday, January 4t". The 7~h grade will play at 5 and the 8th grade will play at 6 at the D.T.M.S. gym.
