Just A Thought
The ripple effc ;t or this thing called life
The small spark spreads outwards
and impacts every tree in the for-
est.
Whether you teach children
or drive a truck, answer phones
for a living or work at home, each
day of your life you impact the
lives rou touch.
Every minute we
. live we have the oppor-
tunity to add to or to take
away from others. It all
begins on the inside. I
find that unhappy people
make others unhappy. I
find that hurting people
hurt people. In other
words, what is on a
person's inside will have
a direct correlation on
what comes out of a per-
son. A person cannot
give away what he doesn't have.
The Bible tells us at Mat-
thew 12:34, "For the mouth
speaks from the overflow of the
heart." What you have inside you
will determine what comes out of
you.
It begins in our heart. It
moves outward through our
mouth and our actions. It impacts
and influences others, and then
the ripple moves outwards into
and through the lives of others.
You always reap what you sew. If
you are sowing dandelion seeds,
you are going to grow weeds. If
you are sowing apple seeds, you
are going to grow apples.
What is'happening on our
inside in most cases is not readily
available to those on the outside.
There are exceptions, but for the
most part, if we randomly walk
up to a stranger and begin to en-
gage in a dialogue, we don't
know what is going on inside the
stranger just from looking at him
or her. Life would be more inter-
esting if God had made us with
numbers on our foreheads. Stick
with me, let me explain.
What if God had created us
in such a manner that in the
middle of each of our foreheads
was a box with a number inside
it. The number would be some-
where between zero and ten. It
would measure our state of mind
or happiness or satisfaction with
the world. If a ten appeared in a

In the life you live, may you
touch and change for the better
the lives of people you never
meet in places you never visit.
This is my prayer for you.
Is this even possible? Sure it
is. Not a single one of us knows
how far the influence
of our actions extend.
Only God knows. The
actions we take today
may manifest them-
selves decades from
now in the lives of
people we will never
meet in locations that
we never journey to.
Bottom line, as we
move through our lives
day to day, none of us
know just how far the
ripple effect will extend from the
actions we take.
Let me break this apart for
you. Each of us influences the
lives of others. The question isn't
"Do you want to influence oth-
ers?," it is "Whom do you influ-
ence?" I guess you could move
to a remote island as its only in-
habitant and live out your life in
solitude and then argue that you
are not influencing others. But
even this act causes an impact on
the friends and family who you
leave behind.
In other words, in just living
day to day you have an impact
on the lives of other lives you
interact with. Then add to this
the fact that everyone you influ-
ence influences others.
As a small pebble dropped
into the middle of a pond sends
ripples outward across the pond,
everything we do radiates out-
ward influencing and impacting
others. The ripple from the pebble
expands from the spot it is
dropped radiating outward incre-
mentally in every direction. It is
the same with the actions we take.
None of us knows the full extent
or impact of the ripples we send
out.
It is pushing the first domino
in a line up of a thousand domi-
nos. The action on the first
domino will, over time, result in
the last domino falling over. It is
a spark at the edge of a dry forest.

person's box, he is having an
awesome day. If a zero appeared
in the box, he is scraping bottom
at that point in his day.
If you walked up to a
stranger who had a two in his box,
you would know what is going
on on the inside of the person,
just as you would if you encoun-
tered a nine. Let's say you go to
mail a letter at the post office and
your number is a five and you run
into another who has a three on
their forehead. You greet the per-
son and tell them you like the
shirt they have on. You watch
their number jump from a three
to a five. They smile and respond
'back, "Thank you." Your num-
ber goes from a five to a six. You
both part ways, but both of you
now are having a better day as
you leave.
Quite simply, you have
added to the life of another. You
have taken something that is in-
side you and by communicating
it to another you have given them
an extra bounce in their step.
The ripple effect starts on
your inside. Many of you are in-
fluencing a child or children. The
lives of the children you are in-
fluencing will impact the lives of
others that each child interacts
with for the rest of their
lives...even after you are gone. It
can be a mind boggling thought,
but your influence On your child
or grandchild will impact others
dozens and dozens of years from
now for better or worse.
Your greatest legacy in this
world may be the positive influ-
ence you have on others from the
lives of a child or children that
you pour yourself into. How is
that for a thought?
I guess what I am saying is
don't underestimate anything
that you do. A kind act, a sharp
word, a small donation to a char-
ity, cursing out loud at a stranger,
telling your spouse you love him
or her, honking at the car in front
of you, an uplifting call to a
friend...each of these simple acts
has an impact and begins the
ripple effect.
I don't want to over empha-
size the impact of small acts, but
actfons that seem meaningless
can change another person's day.
A series of small actions can
change another person's life.
My challenge to you today
is to understand the ripple effect
of everythifig you do. It begins
on your inside. Look inward first.
What is in your heart? A good
heart produces good actions.
Then ask questions such as
"What actions come out of you?"
"Are you adding to the value of
others or taking away? .... Are you
contagious with an attitude that
is worth catching or do people
scatter when you walk in the
room? .... Are you equipping oth-
ers you interact with, friends and
strangers alike, to positively in-
fluence the lives of others?"
You may think you are
merely dropping a pebble in the
middle of a pond, but the end re-
sult may be a life changed for-
ever.
I will close as this column
began. In the life you live, may
you touch and chage for the bet-
ter the lives of people you never
meet in places you never visit.
It is the ripple effect.
