HMS welcomes UNM BA/
MD students to Silver City
Submitted by HMSlSilver City
The' Gombined BA/MD Degree Program ns designed to help ad-
dress the physician shortage in New Mexico by assembling a class of
diverse students who are committed to serving New Mexico commu-
nities. This partnership program between The University of New
Mexico College of Arts and Sciences and The University of New
Mexico School of Medicine is open to New Mexico high school
seniors planning to begin college the fall semester after their high
school graduation•
Hidalgo Medical Services is hosting Judea Wiggins, Natalie Nieto
and Vishal Patel during the month of June in Silver City. While they
will be shadowing local providers Dr.'s Odocha, Carreon and Will-
iams. part of their time will also be spent researching a local issue•
They have chosen to focus on the effects of drugs in our area. They
say "Drug addiction, primarily meth, and alcohol abuse are concern-
ing issues among residents of the Grant county community. Our goal
is to work with elementary, middle, and high schoolers of Grant county
to inform them about the dangers and consequences of alcohol and
drug abuse and the effects that it can have on" their lives in terms of
their health and well-being, their future, and the people that surround
them. Overall, we hope to serve as role models to influence children
to make smarter lifestyle choices rather than succumb to the pressures
that may surround them on a frequent basis•"
They hope to engage students in our area to create a mural that
represents children's dreams and aspirations, fun games and activities
that positively reinforce self-worth and potential, and interactive edu-
cational seminars about making good choices•
